Lancaster Street Bridge Over the Trinity River

Founded in 1960 with three handler/canine teams, the
Unit currently utilizes seven teams with 24 hour, city wide responsibility.
The Unit serves to support Patrol Operations and other field elements of the
Fort Worth Police Department with high risk felony and area searches.
Most officers will
agree, when faced with having to search a dark building for a dangerous suspect,
they feel a little safer when the K-9 Unit arrives on the scene and the dog
enters the building first. It is difficult to know just how many officers
have been saved from possible injury or death because of these remarkable dogs
and their dedicated handlers. Many times just driving up in a K-9 vehicle
is all that is needed to defuse a potentially volatile situation.
Proceeds raised from the
Lancaster Avenue Mile will be used to purchase some of the unique and highly
specialized equipment utilized by the K9 teams. Funds will further serve
to provide a source of funding for the most advanced and progressive training
available worldwide.
The Lancaster Avenue mile is being produced by
Officer Mike Deavers, with Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Police
Department; RunTime Racing Services; and the Fort Worth Running Company.
This special, point-to-point course, will run west down the historic Lancaster
Avenue bridge, from Summit Avenue towards University Drive.
